Обычно небольших размеров молекула, вызывающая при контакте со специфическим участком фермента (аллостерическим центром) аллостерический эффект, являющаяся, таким образом, ингибитором или активатором (т.е. отрицательным или положительным модулятором); например, для аспартаткарбамоилтрансферазы А.э. является цитидинтрифосфат.
